Overview
In the Lucre Valley, Cusco, Peru, the Wool Spinning and Weaving Factory was founded in 1861, considered the first modern textile industry in Peru and South America. The factory was the only one to continue the textile activity that the Obraje Hacienda Nuestra Señora de la Asunción had been carrying out since 1715. Studded in history and tradition, over the years it achieved a high-quality textile production, recognized worldwide. Peru's historical context meant that the factory supplied clothing to royalist, revolutionary, and republican armies, and even to foreign armies due to the export of textiles to the Philippines, the United States, and Spain during the World Wars. Production at the Lucre factory declined around 1968, when it was expropriated, entering a period of debt and conflict that resulted in its eventual bankruptcy. Currently, the factory is undergoing a slow process of restoration and revitalization, with the aim of becoming a tourist attraction.
