In the video series “The People vs. the Real Economy in Three Episodes”, this history of encounters between the two countries—one that was set into motion by what then appeared to be the triumphant “end of history” proclamation of liberalism—is re-examined against the ongoing cri-sis of the liberal project. Amidst the widespread economic dispossession taking place across the world today, this work-in-progress manifestation of a long-term research project into China’s modern political economy takes the country’s over four-decade-long “experiment” with the market economy as a basis to think about what it is exactly we talk about when we talk about “the economy.” – Ho Rui An
