Overview

Marc Augé coins the term "non-place" to spaces of transience, spaces that do not hold enough significance to be considered a place, where the human remains anonymous. These non-places, such as shopping malls, minimize human interaction to a mere exchange of goods and monetary transactions and reduce it to algorithmic-like articulations. The shopping mall contains fixed spaces for different stores. The largest space is usually reserved for the supermarket, where humans move around high shelves arranged in grids that induce a sense of being lost, all awash in artificial light that reflects in the plastic packagings.
