Yes, indeed she was. A transgender warrior who understood that we all of us were in the fight for liberation together. A woman who knew that all fights against oppression were her fight and acted on the fact. Sylvia, a mother of the Transgender movement fighting for the young, for “gay” rights, Sylvia who stood on 42nd street telling people who passed by, “Sign this petition for Homosexual Rights.” Sylvia who along with Marsha P. Johnson founded S.T.A.R , Street Transvestites Revolutionaries and built a home for young queens and run-a-ways. Sylvia who year after year fought for her community to be included in New York’s gay rights bill even up to the time she was dying in the hospital.
